SOME INFORMATION ABOUT CASARSA DELLA DELIZIA

A small-medium sized municipality (counting 7,751 inhabitants on 31/12/1998) in the province of Pordenone with a medium demographic density (380 inhabitants/sq km) located on a plain (44 metres on the sea level). It belongs to the group of municipalities with a medium average income per head.

About the origins of its name:

The evidence of the name “Casam arsam” dates back to 1184 and it should be a Latin form for “burnt houses”, that gave the name to the settlement. As regards “Delizia” (also Italian for “delight”), it should refer to the fruitfulness of the territory between Casarsa and the river Tagliamento.

...some historical information:

It is worthwhile to mention that this area is the cradle of the vine-growing system called “casarsa” that later has become widespread in Friuli and other Italian regions. The first settlements in the area date back to the Roman age; up to 148 b.C. this place was crossed by the consular road Postumia, a road with an important military purpose that linked Vicenza from the Po valley to Aquileia, passing through Casarsa and wading across the river Tagliamento.

Some advice for a visit:

When talking about Casarsa della Delizia, one cannot forget Pier Paolo Pasolini, the Italian film director and writer who spent here his life in the war and post-war period, where he started his work as a teacher and an intellectual, founding the “Academiuta de Lenga furlana” (the Friulian Language Academy) that went on to become very influential in the renaissance of the Friulian literature.

Born in Bologna in 1922, Pasolini moved to Casarsa, hometown to his mother’s family, in 1942. That was the start to his poetic production and the correspondence on his literary progresses with nationally-relevant critics.

Starting from his former family house, today seat of the Centro Archivio Pasolini, it is possible to follow a historical and cultural itinerary through the places pertaining to Pasolini’s life, visiting Versuta, the small church of S. Antonio Abate, the “aga” (water in Friulian) fountain, the castle and the Loggia in S. Giovanni (on whose columns Pasolini used to affix his wall posters), all of which were celebrated and frequently visited by the poet. The itinerary ends at the cemetery of Casarsa, in the north of the city, where the poet, tragically murdered in Rome in 1975, was then buried.
